Our Business
Energy Supply & Trading Across Southern Africa
Cascadia Energy operates at the intersection of physical power supply and regional electricity trading within the Southern African Power Pool.
Energy Supply
Energy Supply
Reliable. Competitively Priced. Regionally Sourced.
Cascadia Energy secures and delivers electricity to utilities, commercial and industrial off-takers, and distribution companies across Zambia and the SAPP region. We work with independent power producers, hydro operators and renewable energy developers to build a diversified, resilient supply portfolio.
Our supply agreements are structured to provide long-term price certainty, flexible delivery terms and bankable offtake commitments — giving our counterparties the confidence to plan, invest and grow.
Bilateral Power Purchase Agreements
Long-term PPAs with IPPs and generators providing price certainty and supply security for utilities and large off-takers.
Short-term & Spot Supply
Flexible short-duration contracts and spot market participation to meet seasonal demand fluctuations and emergency supply needs.
Cross-border Wheeling
Coordination of transmission access and wheeling arrangements across SAPP member state grids.
C&I Off-take Solutions
Tailored supply structures for commercial and industrial customers seeking to bypass utility tariffs and secure competitive pricing.
Energy Trading
Energy Trading
Liquidity. Transparency. Counterparty Reliability.
Cascadia participates in the SAPP Day-Ahead Market (DAM) and operates within the bilateral contract framework that governs cross-border power flows across the region. Our trading desk provides liquidity, price discovery and reliable counterparty performance to regional market participants.
We are building the systems, compliance frameworks and market relationships required to become a trusted trading counterparty for SAPP utilities, IPPs and large consumers — operating to the standards set by SAPP, RERA and national regulators.
SAPP Day-Ahead Market
Active participation in the SAPP DAM, providing competitive bids and offers that improve regional price discovery and market liquidity.
Bilateral Contract Trading
Negotiation and management of bilateral energy contracts between SAPP member utilities and independent market participants.
Risk Management
Robust counterparty credit assessment, position limits and hedging strategies to manage market, credit and operational risk.
Market Intelligence
Proprietary analysis of SAPP hydrology, demand forecasts, generation availability and cross-border transmission constraints.
Technology
Clean Energy Technologies
The Full Spectrum of Zero-Carbon Generation
Cascadia Energy's investment and supply strategy spans the complete landscape of commercially proven and emerging clean energy technologies. We evaluate every technology against the specific resource endowment, grid infrastructure and demand profile of each Southern African market.
Southern Africa is uniquely positioned across multiple clean energy vectors — exceptional solar irradiance, significant hydro resources, geothermal potential along the East African Rift, and growing green hydrogen ambitions. Our technology-agnostic approach allows us to optimise the energy mix for each project and market.
Clean Energy Storage
Energy storage is the enabling technology that unlocks the full value of variable renewable generation. Cascadia's storage strategy spans lithium-ion and flow batteries for short-duration grid services, pumped hydro for long-duration storage, and green hydrogen as a seasonal storage medium. Our Lusaka BESS project (50 MW / 200 MWh) is the first step in building a regional storage portfolio.
Infrastructure
Infrastructure & Project Finance
From Origination to Operations
Cascadia Energy is not only a supplier and trader — we are an infrastructure developer and long-term asset owner. We originate, develop, finance and operate energy infrastructure assets across the SAPP region, with a focus on utility-scale generation, grid-scale storage and cross-border transmission.
Our project finance capability spans the full capital structure — from early-stage development equity through to construction debt and long-term institutional equity. We work with development finance institutions, commercial banks and infrastructure funds to mobilise the capital required to close Southern Africa's energy infrastructure gap.
Project Development
Full-cycle development from site identification and resource assessment through to financial close — including feasibility studies, environmental and social impact assessments, grid connection studies and regulatory approvals.
Project Finance Structuring
Non-recourse and limited-recourse project finance structures, optimised for DFI debt, commercial bank participation and institutional equity. We target investment-grade structures with long-term tenors aligned to asset life.
EPC Procurement & Oversight
Competitive EPC procurement, contractor selection and construction management through to commercial operations date (COD). We work with internationally experienced contractors and local subcontractors.
Asset Management & O&M
Long-term operational management of generation and storage assets, maximising availability, managing O&M costs and delivering on offtake obligations throughout the asset's operational life.
Market Intelligence
Market Intelligence
Data-Driven Decisions in a Complex Market
The SAPP market is shaped by hydrology, weather, demand growth, cross-border transmission constraints and evolving regulatory frameworks. Cascadia's market intelligence function provides the analytical foundation for our supply, trading and investment decisions.
Hydrology & Generation Forecasting
Proprietary modelling of Zambezi and Kafue basin hydrology, reservoir levels and generation availability — the single most important driver of SAPP market prices and supply security.
Demand & Load Forecasting
Short and medium-term demand forecasting across SAPP member states, incorporating economic growth, electrification rates, industrial load and seasonal patterns.
Transmission Constraint Analysis
Real-time and forward-looking analysis of cross-border transmission capacity, congestion and wheeling costs across the SAPP interconnected grid.
Regulatory & Policy Monitoring
Continuous monitoring of regulatory developments, tariff reviews, licensing changes and policy shifts across all SAPP member states and at the regional level.
The Market
The Southern African Power Pool
Understanding the Market We Operate In
The Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) was established in 1995 as a cooperative of national electricity utilities across 12 member states. It is one of the most advanced regional power pools in Africa, operating a Day-Ahead Market, a competitive short-term energy market and a framework for bilateral contracts.
SAPP's total installed capacity exceeds 53GW, serving a combined population of over 300 million people. Despite this capacity, the region faces persistent energy deficits driven by ageing infrastructure, drought-affected hydro generation and rapidly growing demand from urbanisation and industrialisation.
